Week 1: Kids Say the Darndest Things

After wrapping up our first full week of kids cooking classes it’s safe to say that kids say the darndest things.

We learned a lot this week, we smiled a lot this week, we stressed a lot this week and we cooked a lot this week. But when looking back on the week, the things that stick out in my mind are the things the kids said!

We started off our week of cooking with an all-girls summer cooking camp. These girls ranged in age from 12-15 years old.

After thinking back to what we were like at this age, we began to worry a bit! We knew it was going to be a hard task to get these girls to eat a plant-based diet for a few days, and we were really nervous after our initial discussion.

On Day 1, we asked one of the girls what her favorite food was. Her answer was simple: ‘Meat’. Nothing in particular, she just loved Meat :/ But we got past it. The girls were total sweet hearts AND willing to try all of the vegetable heavy dishes.

The most popular dishes from this camp were the plantain chips, mango guacamole, zucchini chips, homemade lara bars, black bean burgers and sweet potato fries.

We finished our week with our first Healthy Hero’s cooking class, focusing on chia seeds, made possible by our first sponsor Nutiva!

We had no idea that chia seeds would be such a hit with the kids but they were!

The kids in this camp were a little younger, ages 6-10. They stated that they don’t like coconut, but they do like coconut water even though “it taste like sweat” :) .

And they didn’t seem to mind the coconut flakes either; but when the flakes were put on a piece of celery with butter, ants on a log soon became “bird poop on a log”.

These guys loved just playing with the chia seeds, making their own concoctions. The most popular dishes with this group were the pineapple chia drink, the banana chia muffins and the chia granola.

Getting kids to eat healthy is no easy task, but it’s definitely a worthwhile cause and lots of fun when you can look back and think of all the silly things that were said over the week. Wonder what crazy things we’ll hear next week!

Healthy Regards,

Sarah&Peter
